What is Cancer?
Abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells in the body is known as Cancer. These cells have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue. Cancer often has the ability to spread throughout your body.
Types of Cancer
There are around 134 types of disorders and syndromes that comes under the category of Cancer. Among these the most common types of Cancer are :
a) Breast Cancer– Uncontrollable growth of cells in the breast leads to breast cancer, breast cancer is one of the leading diseases in India. It can be diagnosed through Mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy. More about Breast cancer
b) Bladder Cancer – Growth of abnormal tissue in the lining of the bladder called tumor, Its main symptoms are blood during urination, Painful urination, pain in the lower back and abdominal area. More about Bladder cancer
c) Colorectal Cancer – Commonly known as bowel or colon cancer is cancer which affects the rectum and people aged above 40years are generally at high risk of developing this disease. More about Colorectal cancer
d) Kidney Cancer- Kidney cancers develop in the lining of tiny tubes in the kidney. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma. Cancer in this part of the body is easily identifiable and mostly detected before spreading to other parts of the body. More about Kidney cancer
e) Lung Cancer- Abnormal growth of cells in one or both the lungs, people who smoke and are exposed to radon gases, and other carcinogenic substances are at higher risk of developing lung cancer.
f) Leukemia- Commonly known as bone marrow or blood cancer. It is the cancer of blood cells that is caused by the rising of white blood cells inhibiting the production of red blood cells that are necessary for a healthy body.
g)Lymphoma- This is a type of cancer that affects the immune system of the body i.e. cells that fight infections called lymphocytes. Spleen, thymus, bone marrow, lymph nodes consists of these cells. There are two types of lymphoma – Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin.
h) Pancreatic Cancer- This is a disease in which malignant cells grow in the pancreas, this is the gland located behind the stomach and is responsible for releasing digestive juices and hormones that regulate blood sugar. Unexplained weight loss with fatigue and abdominal pain are the early symptoms.
i) Prostate Cancer- Prostate gland which is present in male gets affected because of abnormal cell growth. This gland is mainly responsible for producing fluid in semen and controlling urine.
j) Thyroid Cancer-It is the small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in your thyroid undergo genetic changes (mutations). The mutations allow the cells to grow and multiply rapidly. The cells also lose the ability to die, as normal cells would. Accumulation of abnormal thyroid cells forms a tumor. The abnormal cells can invade nearby tissue and can spread throughout the body
k) Oral /Oropharyngeal Cancer- Oral cancer includes cancer of mouth, lips, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, pharynx(throat). Unexplained bleeding in the mouth, eroded area on the lips, gums, lumps, and bumps, rough spots are some of the common symptoms of oral cancer.
